Deputy Chair of PKS Advocates for Sanctions Against Israel to Address Palestinian Rights Violations
The Deputy Chair of the PKS criticized the lack of international sanctions against Israel following its approval of new settlements in the West Bank. He called for Indonesia to take a firm diplomatic stance regarding Palestine and highlighted the double standards in the global response to different conflicts. Sukamta emphasized Indonesia’s potential leadership role and the need for strategic actions to support Palestinian rights.
The Deputy Chair of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) expressed grave concerns regarding Israel’s recent decision to construct 4,427 new homes in the occupied West Bank. Sukamta, a member of the Indonesian House of Representatives’ Commission I, emphasized that Israel’s ongoing annexation of Palestinian territories is facilitated by the lack of substantial sanctions from the United Nations and the international community. He drew a stark comparison between the international response to Russia’s actions in Ukraine and the ongoing injustices faced by the Palestinians, asserting that disparate consequences reveal a troubling double standard in global politics. Sukamta stated, “The countries in the world are shameful and show that politics and economics are above humanity. Even though the Israeli occupation of Palestine is longer and more severe in terms of annexation of territories, the number of victims of the Palestinian people is compared to what happened to Ukraine.” He advised the Indonesian government to become more proactive in addressing the Palestinian issue, particularly as Indonesia currently holds a leadership role within the G-20. He urged for both immediate and long-term strategies, suggesting that Indonesia should exert diplomatic pressure on Israel and advocate for United Nations peacekeepers and sanctions against Israeli actions. Additionally, he stressed the importance of enhancing Indonesia’s economic, technological, and defense capabilities to assert its role on the world stage.
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has persisted for decades, characterized by disputes over territory, governance, and international recognition. The recent decision by Israel to expand settlements in the West Bank has drawn international condemnation, especially as such actions are seen to violate international law and undermine the prospects for peace. There is a perceived inconsistency in how different nations and organizations respond to geopolitical crises, with notable contrast to the sanctions imposed on Russia in the context of the Ukraine conflict. This reflects a broader conversation about human rights and the responsibilities of the international community.
In conclusion, the Deputy Chair of the PKS has highlighted the urgent need for the international community to impose strict sanctions on Israel to halt its ongoing violations against Palestinians, drawing attention to the apparent double standards in global politics. Indonesia’s potential role as a leader in advocating for Palestinian rights is emphasized, with calls for proactive diplomacy and strengthening its national capacities. Addressing these injustices is essential not only for the Palestinian people but also for fostering a more equitable international order.
