On November 4-5, 2024, India’s National Security Advisor, Ajit Doval, engaged in discussions with his Nigerian counterpart, Nuhu Ribadu, in New Delhi as part of their second Strategic and Counter-Terrorism Dialogue. The talks centered around the serious issues of terrorism, extremism, and radicalization, addressing their impacts through cyberspace and the international crime landscape, including arms and drug trafficking. The two officials underscored their commitment to intensifying bilateral cooperation to combat terrorism and highlighted the need for international collaboration in this regard. As part of his visit, NSA Ribadu toured the premises of the National Security Guard in Manesar, indicating Nigeria’s interest in understanding India’s security mechanisms. The two nations have enjoyed a diplomatic relationship since India’s establishment of a presence in Lagos in 1958, maintaining high-level political interactions over the decades. Currently, approximately 50,000 Indians reside in Nigeria, reflecting the depth of the bilateral ties that have also seen cultural alliances flourish, as demonstrated in recent dialogues focused on youth engagement, women empowerment, and entrepreneurship. In this context, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) noted the shared conviction among both countries that terrorism is indefensible in any guise, paving the way for a reinforced engagement against various forms of violence. The ongoing dialogue signifies a pivotal step in solidifying India-Nigeria relations not just in terms of security but across multiple sectors vital for mutual development.
