The Young Activists Summit, which began in 2019, has become a pivotal platform for empowering and connecting young advocates dedicated to human rights and environmental protection. The 2024 Summit, under the theme “Go Far, Go Together,” highlighted the inspiring narratives and impactful endeavors of five distinguished laureates aged 19 to 30. These young leaders are tackling significant global issues such as climate change, sexual harassment, racism, and homelessness, exemplifying the effectiveness of youth-led initiatives. This year’s laureates include Marley Dias, who promotes diversity in literature; Shanley Clemot McLaren, addressing online gender-based violence; Alvaro Quiroz, who empowers homeless individuals through art; Cynthia Houniuhi, leading legal actions against climate change; and Sohanur Rahman, who advocates for climate justice and democratic reform in Bangladesh. Each of these individuals demonstrates the profound capabilities of youth to enact social change within their communities and globally. A notable highlight this year is Sohanur Rahman, nominated by the EU Ambassador in Bangladesh for his substantial contributions to climate justice through his organization, YouthNet. Having survived cyclones that devastated his homeland, he recognized the urgent need for climate awareness and founded YouthNet for Climate Justice in 2016. His leadership led to significant achievements, including the 2019 declaration of a climate emergency by the Bangladeshi Parliament and the prevention of ten coal power plants from being constructed. Recently, he was instrumental in student-led protests advocating for democracy, resulting in the removal of a long-standing Prime Minister. Today, Sohanur remains active in urging the interim government to prioritize climate initiatives.
The Young Activists Summit serves as a significant forum that amplifies the voices and actions of young leaders battling pressing societal issues worldwide. Since its establishment in 2019, the Summit has emphasized the importance of collaboration and shared experiences among youth in driving collective solutions to complex challenges. The 2024 event showcased the dedication of young changemakers who are not only aware of challenges such as climate change and social injustice but are also actively engaged in their resolution through innovative strategies and grassroots activism. The stories of laureates this year illuminate a broader movement for systemic change led by empowered youth. Particularly, the focus on climate action reflects a growing recognition of this existential threat and underscores the role of young people in advocating for substantial policy shifts and community-based actions to combat environmental degradation.
The 2024 Young Activists Summit has illustrated the vital role of youth in addressing global challenges through advocacy and action. The laureates, through their distinct initiatives, highlight how young leaders are capable of driving significant change in areas such as climate justice, gender equality, and social activism. As echoed by Maimouna Ba, a previous laureate, this Summit not only provides hope and inspiration but also fosters a community where young activists can collaborate and innovate for a better future. The importance of continued support and recognition for these young leaders cannot be overstated as they pave the way for transformative changes in society.
