Sudan’s Darfur Joint Force, part of the Sudan Liberation Movement, intercepted a weapons convoy allegedly from Chad destined for the RSF. The operation highlighted claims that the UAE is arming the RSF, raising concerns about external influences on regional stability. The RSF continues to engage in conflict alongside the Sudanese army in Darfur.

On November 21, 2024, the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) announced that its forces within the Darfur Joint Force successfully intercepted a weapons convoy allegedly transporting arms from Chad to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Darfur. The SLM, headed by Minni Minawi, claimed responsibility for the operation conducted in the desert region border with Chad and Libya, asserting that the RSF utilizes this area for transporting military supplies throughout Sudan.

The SLM’s statement revealed that the intercepted cache included various combat vehicles, ammunition boxes, and Kornet anti-tank guided missiles. Moreover, it featured a Colombian military identity card and passport issued with a visa from Al Maktoum International Airport, Dubai. This interception highlights growing concerns regarding external influences on the RSF, with the Sudanese government accusing the United Arab Emirates of arming the RSF through Chad.

The Sudanese government articulated that this incident underscores the RSF’s reliance on foreign arms supplies and mercenaries, which pose threats to Sudan’s stability and security. Since the resurgence of conflict in 2023, the RSF, led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, has been actively engaged in military operations alongside the Sudanese army against various armed factions in the region. The UAE has yet to respond to these accusations.

The ongoing conflict in Sudan, particularly in the Darfur region, has seen various armed groups engage in violence and power struggles, often exacerbated by external influences. The RSF has emerged as a significant paramilitary force, involved in numerous military engagements since the resumption of conflict in 2023. The involvement of foreign nations, specifically the UAE, has raised alarms concerning arms supplies and the complex dynamics of regional security. The seizure of weapons by the Darfur Joint Force reflects the ongoing challenges in combating arms smuggling and the influence of external actors in Sudan’s internal conflicts.

The recent interception of a weapons convoy by the Darfur Joint Force reveals critical issues surrounding arms smuggling and foreign involvement in Sudan’s conflicts. The allegations against the UAE for supplying the RSF contribute to the ongoing discourse on the international community’s role in the stability of Sudan. Continued vigilance is necessary to address these external influences and their impact on national security.
