NATO’s Special Representative Strengthens Ties during Visit to Jordan
NATO’s Special Representative, Mr. Javier Colomina, visited Jordan on November 6, 2024. He met with senior officials, discussing the strategic partnership between NATO and Jordan, regional security, anti-terrorism efforts, and the establishment of a NATO Liaison Office in Amman.
On November 6, 2024, NATO’s Special Representative for the Southern Neighbourhood, Mr. Javier Colomina, conducted his inaugural visit to Jordan. During this visit, he engaged with prominent officials including the Secretary General of the Foreign Ministry, the Political Advisor to the King, and the Director of General Intelligence. Mr. Colomina expressed his appreciation for the strengthening strategic partnership between NATO and Jordan, addressing various mutual interests, particularly those pertaining to regional security challenges.
Mr. Colomina remarked, “Jordan is one of the strongest NATO partners and a key player in the region and beyond.” He lauded the diplomatic efforts of His Majesty King Abdallah II bin al-Hussein, highlighting his work to mitigate the escalation of conflicts in the Middle East. Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of international collaboration in combating terrorism and discussed enhancing cooperation through the “Aqaba Process” initiated by King Abdallah in 2015.
The Special Representative took the opportunity to reaffirm NATO’s commitment to supporting Jordan in border security through the NATO Defence Capacity Building package, stating that “it is important to respond to the security needs of our partners.” He also outlined the final steps for establishing a NATO Liaison Office in Amman, which is a crucial aspect of an Action Plan ratified by Allied leaders at the NATO Summit in Washington D.C. this past July. Mr. Colomina identified the opening of this office as “a key priority for Allies” that will significantly enhance political dialogue, practical cooperation, and NATO’s visibility in the region.
NATO’s engagement with Jordan is pivotal due to Jordan’s strategic position and role in regional stability. Since 2015, King Abdallah II has been instrumental in promoting initiatives such as the Aqaba Process, aimed at fostering collaboration in countering terrorism and enhancing security cooperation among states in the region.
