Nigeria Seeks South Africa’s Support for G20 and BRICS Membership
Nigeria seeks South Africa’s backing for full membership in G20, BRICS, and the BRICS New Development Bank while emphasizing the need for cooperation on regional peace efforts, specifically regarding Sudan.
On Monday, Nigeria sought the support of South Africa regarding its ambitions to secure full membership in the G20, BRICS, and the BRICS New Development Bank. This appeal was made by Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, during her closing remarks at the ministerial session of the 11th Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission held in Cape Town. She emphasized the necessity for South Africa’s collaboration to pursue leadership roles in pivotal discussions during its G20 presidency.
With South Africa now leading the G20, comprising the world’s wealthiest nations, Nigeria aims to enhance its participation in these major global economic platforms. Notably, the expanded BRICS group is identified as a significant contributor to global economic growth, representing approximately 37% of global GDP. Furthermore, Ms. Ojukwu reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to fostering regional peace and called for South African assistance in expediting the peace process in Sudan.
She indicated that President Bola Tinubu, recognized as a member of the African Union’s ad hoc mediation committee, is committed to resolving the ongoing Sudanese crisis to promote stability in the region. “We are dedicated to resolving the Sudan situation, and under this pretext, we request South Africa’s assistance in accelerating the peace process and ensuring that tensions in our region are de-escalated,” stated Ojukwu. South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Dr. Roland Lamola, acknowledged Nigeria’s requests, vowing to amplify Africa’s voice during its G20 leadership.
The session culminated in the production of a written communiqué and agreed-upon minutes, which will be presented to Presidents Tinubu and Ramaphosa during the subsequent presidential session of the Bi-National Commission.
