Kyrgyzstan Takes Significant Steps Towards Implementing ILO Convention No. 190
On November 26, 2024, Kyrgyzstan’s Parliament launched discussions on implementing ILO Convention No. 190 during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. On November 26, 2024, the Parliament Council on the Rights of Women, Children, and Gender Equality of Kyrgyzstan convened to launch the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. This meeting focused on the commitment to implement the ILO Convention No. 190 on Violence and Harassment following Kyrgyzstan’s ratification of the convention in June 2024, marking it as the first country in Central Asia to do so. Key discussions included the outcomes of the Central Asian Women Leaders’ Dialogue and gender-sensitive budgeting analysis.
Antje Grawe, the UN Resident Coordinator, emphasized that addressing gender-based violence is essential for achieving gender equality as highlighted in the 2030 Agenda. Özge Berber Agtaş, ILO Specialist, initiated a series of policy dialogues to share legislative measures and recommendations from various countries on implementing C190. The dialogues enabled an exchange of knowledge and fostered collaboration among members of Parliament, government entities, UN Agencies, and other stakeholders.
Ms. Dzhamilya Isaeva, Vice-Speaker of the Parliament, reaffirmed the commitment to international standards and the need for further legislative action to improve living conditions for all citizens. The Parliament plans to review and propose amendments to current labor laws in accordance with the spirit of C190 to enhance workers’ conditions.
As the Council adopted recommendations for the Cabinet of Ministers, this engagement represents a significant step towards eradicating violence and harassment in workplaces, demonstrating Kyrgyzstan’s proactive stance in enforcing the necessary changes to foster a decent work environment.
