Benin’s CENA Collaborates with INEC for Innovative Electoral Strategies Ahead of 2026 Elections

The Autonomous National Electoral Commission of Benin (CENA) has engaged with Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for insights into electoral management, preparing for its 2026 legislative, local, and presidential elections. A 12-member CENA team visited Abuja for this purpose. INEC expressed its commitment to support CENA’s preparations, aiding in various election-related processes.
In preparation for its most complex electoral season in 2026, the Autonomous National Electoral Commission of Benin (CENA) has sought the expertise of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). A delegation of 12 members, led by CENA President Sacca Lafia, visited Abuja to study the electoral processes in Nigeria. The delegation aims to gain insights to effectively conduct three elections in Benin—legislative and local elections set for January 2026 and a presidential election scheduled for April 2026.
During the meeting, INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, articulated Nigeria’s willingness to assist Benin in enhancing its electoral readiness. He remarked, “Early last month, we received a letter from CENA indicating its interest in undertaking a study visit to INEC Nigeria as they prepare for what they described as their most complex election in 2026.” CENA is particularly focused on learning about Nigeria’s electoral legal framework, election materials design and printing, recruitment and training of poll officials, budgeting, security measures, the deployment of technology, observer accreditation, and stakeholder engagement.
President Lafia acknowledged INEC’s hospitality, expressing the significance of this collaborative effort. “The President has mandated the conduct of three elections within three months in 2026. We are going to learn from Nigeria’s experience so that we can do well; this meeting and engagement will surely make that come to pass,” he stated. This exchange exemplifies regional cooperation in strengthening electoral systems, highlighting the importance of shared knowledge in navigating complex electoral landscapes.
The relationship between electoral commissions across West Africa is essential for promoting democratic integrity and capacity building. As elections become increasingly challenging and complex, commissions like CENA seek frameworks and practices from experienced bodies like INEC to enhance their operational efficiency. Benin’s planned triple election cycle presents a unique challenge, necessitating comprehensive insights into effective electoral management from its neighboring country.
In conclusion, the partnership between CENA and INEC symbolizes a proactive approach to enhancing electoral processes in Benin ahead of the 2026 elections. The shared experiences and practices from Nigeria will equip CENA with the necessary tools to manage three significant elections within a condensed timeframe. This collaboration underscores the importance of regional cooperation in building stronger electoral infrastructures in West Africa.
