Vijay Diwas: Bangladeshi Veterans Reflect on India’s Support in Liberation War

Abdus Salam Chaudhary, who was only 17 when he joined the fight, recalled, “All I had was ambition and ammunition to fight the war.” He emphasized the commitment shown by India, stating, “They gave all kinds of support, training, food, everything. That’s how our relations were founded, and they are continuing.”
Lieutenant Colonel (Retd.) Quazi Sajjad Ali Zahir spoke about the transient nature of the current political climate in Bangladesh, expressing hope for improvements that will benefit the populace. Meanwhile, Indian veterans, like Wing Commander (Retd.) D. J. Claire, reminisced about their participation in the war, sharing that he had fought alongside his father during this significant conflict.
Colonel (Retd.) Suresh Kumar Sharma recounted the experiences of witnessing the brutalities inflicted upon the Bangladeshi people by Pakistani forces. He stated, “We went there not as liberators. We went there to fight the inhuman cruelties Bangladeshis were facing at the hands of Pakistani forces.”
The observance of Vijay Diwas was marked by the ceremonial laying of wreaths at the War Memorial and the participation of military personnel in a tattoo display. Amid growing tensions between India and Bangladesh, the nature of the Bangladeshi involvement in this year’s event was of considerable interest to observers. West Bengal Governor C. V.
