Italy and the Dominican Republic Strengthen Aerospace Collaboration on National Space Day
The Embassy of Italy in the Dominican Republic hosted a conference on aerospace cooperation, emphasizing the development of nano-satellites. In celebration of National Space Day, the Embassy of Italy in the Dominican Republic, along with the Dominican National Council for Climate Change and Clean Development Mechanism (CNCCMDL), hosted the conference titled “Promoting Aerospace Development: Italian-Dominican Cooperation” at the Pedro Henríquez Ureña University (Intec). Students from Intec and Don Bosco School participated, learning about the significant role of nano-satellites in advanced data acquisition relevant to monitoring marine biodiversity and sargassum influx among other vital concerns.
Marco Lisi, the special envoy for space from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to aid the Dominican Republic in enhancing its capacity for space observation and data analysis, while also reflecting on Italy’s space sector progress. His presentation commemorated the 60th anniversary of Italy’s first satellite launch, the San Marco I, which took place on December 15, 1964.
Paolo Marzioli from Rome’s La Sapienza University articulated how advancements in space technology foster substantial growth across various scientific and technological fields, enhancing skills in aeronautics, physics, and programming. The Acting Chargé d’Affaires of the Italian Embassy in Santo Domingo, Rodolfo Colaci, underscored the necessity of international cooperation and space diplomacy given today’s intricate global landscape.
Teodoro Jiménez, the head of Geomantics at CNCCMDL, lauded Italian collaboration in developing the National Centre for Processing Climate Archives and Satellite and Drone Images. Edwin Sánchez Camilo from Intec detailed the Quisqueyasat-1 project phases, emphasizing its collaborative nature with Italy and the crucial need for ongoing monitoring of the sargassum phenomenon as a foundation for future complex aerospace initiatives.
