NATO’s Special Representative Strengthens Ties with Jordan in Strategic Visit

On November 6, 2024, NATO’s Special Representative for the Southern Neighbourhood, Javier Colomina, made a significant visit to Jordan, marking his inaugural trip in this capacity. His discussions included meetings with prominent officials such as the Secretary General of the Foreign Ministry, the Political Advisor to His Majesty the King, and the Director of General Intelligence. The emphasis was placed on the bolstering strategic partnership between NATO and Jordan, alongside a dialogue on pertinent regional security challenges.
Highlighting Jordan’s pivotal role, Mr. Colomina stated, “Jordan is one of the strongest NATO partners and a key player in the region and beyond.” He expressed appreciation for the insights provided by his Jordanian counterparts regarding regional dynamics and acknowledged the proactive diplomatic measures undertaken by King Abdallah II to mitigate the conflict in the Middle East. Moreover, he underscored the importance of continued collaboration to combat terrorism, particularly through the framework of the “Aqaba Process” initiated by the King in 2015.
Additionally, Mr. Colomina addressed the imminent establishment of a NATO Liaison Office in Amman, a critical component of an Action Plan ratified by Allied leaders during the NATO Summit in Washington D.C. in July. He articulated that this office represents a fundamental priority for NATO allies, stating it would be “a key priority for Allies” and will serve as a milestone in enhancing the NATO-Jordan strategic partnership, promoting deeper political dialogue, and amplifying NATO’s presence in the region.
NATO’s engagement with Middle Eastern partners is crucial for addressing shared security challenges. Jordan has established itself as a vital ally to NATO in the region, actively participating in various cooperative security initiatives. The country has also been instrumental in regional peace efforts and counterterrorism operations. The ongoing dialogue with Jordan aims to bolster security cooperation and enhance operational capabilities among allied forces.
