Italy Supports Somalia’s Training for UN Security Council Role
The Italian Ambassador in Mogadishu met with the Somali President to mark the conclusion of a training program aimed at preparing Somalia for its role in the UN Security Council. Funded by Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the initiative included two training sessions on UN procedures and international issues, with ongoing support planned through early 2025.
On the occasion of the conclusion of the second session of the “Training and Advisory Programme for the Federal Government of Somalia on UN Security Council Membership,” Italy’s Ambassador to Mogadishu, Pier Mario Daccò Coppi, had an audience with Somalia’s President, Hassan Scheik Mohamud. This intensive training initiative is funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and organized by UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) in collaboration with the Med-Or Foundation.
The Somali President expressed gratitude towards Italy and conveyed appreciation to the project coordinators from the Med-Or Foundation for their efforts in this training program. This training commenced with an initial session held in Rome last November and was followed by a second phase in Mogadishu. Somali diplomats and officials were educated on the procedures and operational guidelines of the United Nations Security Council, of which Somalia will serve as a non-permanent member for the 2025-2026 term, as well as important international geopolitical matters.
The success of this training has been attributed to the organizers’ professionalism and the exceptional expertise of the diplomats and experts leading the seminars, as noted by both the Italian ambassador and the Somali president. Initiated by Med-Or Foundation President Marco Minniti and supported by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Italian Embassy in Mogadishu, the program is set to extend into early 2025, providing continued training and consultation for Somalia’s permanent mission in New York and officials in Mogadishu involved in Security Council activities.
This article discusses a training program aimed at preparing Somali officials for their upcoming role as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. The initiative reflects Italy’s support for Somalia’s capacity building and international engagement. The training sessions are designed to equip Somali diplomats with essential knowledge about UN protocols and global geopolitical issues, driving Somalia’s diplomatic readiness in forthcoming international forums.
In summary, the training program aimed at strengthening Somalia’s engagement with the United Nations has received significant support from Italy. The initiative is seen as critical for enhancing Somalia’s diplomatic effectiveness as it prepares for its role on the UN Security Council. The continued commitment to this initiative by both Italian officials and the Somali government underscores the importance of international cooperation in fostering peace and governance in Somalia.
