Egyptian and Jordanian foreign ministers, Badr Abdelatty and Ayman Safadi, discussed Syria’s sovereignty, the need for a Syrian-led political process, and regional security concerns, after Safadi’s visit to Damascus. Both emphasized aiding Syria’s reconstruction and securing the Jordan-Syria border.

On Monday, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi convened to discuss the critical situation in Syria. They emphasized the need to support Syria while upholding its sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, which they believe can be achieved through a comprehensive political process driven by the Syrian people. The ministers called for inclusive participation and protection of the citizens’ rights.

During their discussions, Safadi provided updates on his recent visit to Syria, where he met Ahmad al-Shara, the leader of Syria’s governing faction. The talks primarily focused on Syria’s political transition and the overarching security challenges in the region. Notably, Safadi condemned a recent Israeli incursion into Syrian territory.

The Jordanian minister reiterated Jordan’s dedication to assisting Syria’s reconstruction, asserting that Jordan will promote collaboration among regional and global partners with Syria’s new leadership. A post from Jordan’s Foreign Ministry on social media further reiterated the strategic importance of Syria’s reconstruction for both Jordan and the wider region.

Additionally, Safadi remarked on the need to secure the lengthy shared border between Jordan and Syria, citing ongoing threats from terrorism, drug trafficking, and weapons smuggling, stressing the necessity for a stable and secure border. On the same day, Minister Abdelatty held a phone conversation with Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud to discuss Syria’s current situation, highlighting the importance of respecting Syria’s sovereignty and effectively restoring its state institutions. He urged for a Syrian-led political process that engages diverse segments of society to achieve stability.

The discussions between Egypt and Jordan’s foreign ministers come at a time of significant turmoil in Syria, where various factions vie for power amid ongoing conflicts. The emphasis on supporting Syria’s sovereignty underscores a broader regional effort to stabilize. Jordan, sharing a long border with Syria, faces security challenges stemming from the unrest. Both countries seek to foster a political process that allows Syrians to determine their future, highlighting the importance of people’s participation in achieving peace and stability. Regional dynamics, including recent escalations involving Israel, also contribute to the heightened focus on Syria’s future and reconstruction efforts.

In conclusion, the dialogue between Egyptian and Jordanian officials highlights a strong commitment to Syria’s sovereignty and the urgency of a political solution led by the Syrian people. By fostering collaboration with regional and international partners, both countries aim to support reconstruction efforts and ensure regional security. Their proactive stance reinforces the importance of solidarity among neighboring nations during these challenging times.
