Iran’s attempt to abduct Israeli journalist Babak Itzhaki and a colleague in Turkey was foiled when a former political prisoner backed out at the last minute. This incident illustrates the ongoing threats journalists face from the Iranian regime, prompting calls for stronger support for media freedom.

Iran attempted to kidnap two journalists, including an Israeli reporter, by enticing them to the Turkish city of Van, located near the Iranian border. Babak Itzhaki, an Israeli correspondent for Iran International, disclosed that the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) plotted to abduct him and a colleague to smuggle them into Iran. The plot was thwarted when Mohammad Hovshmzadeh, a former Iranian political prisoner who had been pressured to assist in the abduction, ultimately refused to comply. Despite the unsuccessful attempt, Itzhaki highlighted this incident as an example of the ongoing threats faced by journalists, particularly from oppressive regimes.

In recent years, Iranian authorities have increasingly targeted journalists, both within and outside their borders, as part of a wider strategy to silence dissent and control narratives. The IRGC has made multiple attempts to abduct or harm individuals who pose a threat to the regime’s image. Irrespective of geographic boundaries, the Iranian government has demonstrated a willingness to operate outside its borders to extend its reach and punish dissidents.

This incident underscores the serious threats journalists face internationally, especially from regimes such as Iran, which actively seek to suppress investigative journalism. The global community and organizations committed to press freedom must respond decisively to prevent further acts of aggression against media personnel. Increasing awareness and mobilizing support for journalists can help safeguard their vital role in fostering transparency and accountability.
