The WMO declared 2024 as likely the hottest year to date, underscoring extreme weather impacts globally on communities and the environment. Record heat, intensified by climate change, has resulted in severe health and ecological consequences. Urgent adaptation strategies and shifts to renewable energies are crucial as the world faces an escalating climate crisis and prepares for 2025’s International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has warned that the year 2024 is poised to become the warmest on record, highlighting severe climate changes that affect everything from mountain peaks to ocean depths, deeply impacting communities, economies, and the environment. WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo emphasized the importance of every fraction of a degree of warming. This year witnessed unprecedented rainfall, catastrophic flooding, humidity-related health issues, and extreme heat, with temperatures in many regions exceeding 50°C. 

Additionally, a report from World Weather Attribution and Climate Central confirmed that climate change has intensified 26 out of 29 extreme weather incidents examined in their study. This included an alarming increase of 41 dangerous heat days in 2024, causing significant damage to human health and ecosystems. Friederike Otto, a climate science lecturer, stressed the necessity of transitioning to renewable energy sources and implementing existing technologies to combat fossil fuel reliance. 

The cry for urgent action is echoed by discussions surrounding the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation in 2025, emphasizing the critical function of glaciers and ice in our climate system, as accelerating glacial melt poses dire consequences. Amidst the backdrop of extensive wildfires and unusual weather patterns in the Arctic, further preparations for extreme weather are imperative. Julie Arrighi, Director of Programmes at the Climate Centre, noted our lack of preparedness for life at 1.5°C of warming and urged nations to accelerate their climate adaptation efforts in 2025.

The impacts of climate change are increasingly prominent, manifesting in extreme weather events that threaten global ecosystems and human livelihoods. As global temperatures rise, the cascading effects range from altered weather patterns in mountainous regions to rising sea levels threatening coastal communities. Various scientific organizations, including the World Meteorological Organization, report increasing incidences of severe heat, intensified storms, and catastrophic flooding, necessitating an urgent response at both local and global levels to adapt and mitigate these changes.

The alarming trends highlighted by the WMO and other scientific bodies demonstrate that climate change is wreaking havoc worldwide, necessitating immediate and concerted efforts to address its impacts. The warnings of record-breaking temperatures, increased extreme weather, and the urgent need for renewable energy sources underline the importance of international collaboration in climate action.
