International Workshop on Climate Change Resilience Held in Tuvalu

On August 15-16, 2024, Taiwan, the United States, Australia, Japan, and Tuvalu hosted a workshop titled “Building Climate Change Resilience for Small Island States” in Tuvalu. The event featured over 60 participants and discussions on multilateral cooperation alongside field visits to projects aimed at climate adaptation.

The workshop titled “Building Climate Change Resilience for Small Island States” took place on August 15-16, 2024, in Tuvalu, under the Global Cooperation and Training Framework (GCTF). Organized collaboratively by Tuvalu, Taiwan, the United States, Australia, and Japan, this event marked the first GCTF workshop hosted by Tuvalu. The workshop welcomed over 60 participants from the organizing countries, along with representatives from Palau, the Marshall Islands, and Sweden, emphasizing a collective effort to address the challenges posed by climate change in small island nations.

Key figures in attendance included Brenton Garlick from the Australian High Commission in Tuvalu, Michael Glees from the U.S. Agency for International Development, and Minister Maina Talia of Tuvalu, who oversees home affairs, climate change, and environment. The program involved sharing best practices in policy formulation and strategies for enhancing multilateral cooperation, supplemented by field visits to land reclamation projects and floating solar systems implemented under the Tuvalu Coastal Adaptation Project.

The Global Cooperation and Training Framework (GCTF) was initiated in 2015 by Taiwan and the United States to facilitate international collaboration in addressing global issues. This workshop is a significant step in promoting climate resilience among small island states, many of which face existential threats due to rising sea levels and environmental degradation. The collaboration between multiple nations highlights the urgent need for cooperative efforts to tackle climate challenges while sharing innovative solutions and practices.
