Sudan Army Chief Initiates Investigation into Alleged Atrocities in Gezira
General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan of Sudan orders an investigation into allegations of atrocities committed by the army in Gezira after recapturing Wad Madani from the RSF. South Sudan expresses concern over civilian deaths, including its nationals. The UN and US representatives criticize the violence, emphasizing the need for accountability among responsible parties in the conflict, which has persisted since April 2023.
Sudan’s army chief, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has initiated an investigation into reported widespread atrocities by his troops during the recapture of the Gezira region capital, Wad Madani, from paramilitary forces. Concerns have emerged regarding civilian casualties, including foreign nationals, following this military action, prompting the government of neighboring South Sudan to formally protest the loss of its citizens’ lives.
Since April 2023, Sudan has been embroiled in conflict between its army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), with significant impact on civilian populations. The strategic city of Wad Madani fell into RSF control approximately one year prior but was recently regained by the army. This ongoing conflict has led to numerous allegations of both sides committing severe human rights violations, including accusations of sporadic retaliatory attacks against civilians in several regions.
In response to concerns, General Burhan has established a committee to investigate the allegations of killings in Camp Taiba and will report back within a week. Both the Sudanese army and the RSF have been implicated in accusations of atrocities throughout the prolonged conflict. The situation remains volatile, with increasing international scrutiny over the humanitarian consequences stemming from the ongoing warfare.
