JUBA: In response to a wave of violent rioting in Juba, South Sudan, police authorities have instituted a nationwide curfew beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday. This measure follows allegations regarding the killing of South Sudanese individuals by the Sudanese army and allied forces. Police Chief Abraham Peter Manyuat announced that the curfew will be enforced daily from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. until further notice, aimed at restoring order and preventing further property damage.
The riots erupted after youths in various neighborhoods vandalized and plundered stores belonging to Sudanese nationals, leading to the deaths of at least three individuals and injuring seven others, some from gunfire and machete attacks. In Aweil, near the Sudan border, three homes owned by Sudanese citizens were reportedly set ablaze. In light of these incidents, police and security forces are working to relocate Sudanese individuals to safer areas amid fears of continued violence.
These disturbances followed reports of attacks on South Sudanese civilians by members of the Sudanese military in Wad Madani, Al-Jazira region, sparking public outrage. The Sudanese army has characterized these actions as “individual violations,” while facing accusations from human rights organizations regarding ethnic targeting. Earlier this week, South Sudan’s Foreign Ministry summoned the Sudanese ambassador to address the situation, with President Salva Kiir Mayardit urging restraint among citizens and advising against hostility towards Sudanese traders and refugees in the country.
