CENCO’s Call for Interfaith Prayer Initiative for Peace in DRC
Msgr. Donatien Nshole, of CENCO, expressed support for an initiative led by Justice Minister Constant Mutamba, creating interfaith prayers for the FARDC and those affected in eastern DR Congo. Nshole affirmed the Church’s dedication to prayer while emphasizing broader compassion for all affected groups, including victims of violence. He underscored that their prayers aim for peace, not victory in war.
In Kinshasa, Msgr. Donatien Nshole, Secretary General of the Congolese National Episcopal Conference (CENCO), responded positively to the Minister of Justice, Constant Mutamba Tungunga’s proposal to unite religious groups on February 9 for prayers for the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC) and the eastern provinces affected by violence. Nshole affirmed the Catholic Church’s commitment to prayer while emphasizing that such practices must align with the Church’s principles.
The initiative aims to gather various religious leaders to pray for peace in the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s east, which has been plagued by conflict and armed groups. The minister has urged prayer sessions, both locally and internationally, to collect funds for the FARDC and local militia groups. In addressing the minister’s request, Nshole highlighted the urgency of their mission amidst the dire humanitarian crises in the area.
Nshole articulated the Church’s broader mission, stating, “Our mission as a Church is to pray. We are aware that the humanitarian and security situation in the east is catastrophic.” He noted the need to also pray for victims and displaced families, not merely the soldiers, broadening the focus of their prayers to encompass peace for all affected individuals.
Furthermore, Nshole referenced Canon Law in discussing offerings, explaining that charitable support should extend to military families but must respect Church doctrine. He concluded by asserting the purpose of their prayers, explicitly stating, “We do not pray to win the war, but to obtain peace.”
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is experiencing significant turmoil, particularly in its eastern regions, due to ongoing violence from numerous armed groups. This crisis has resulted in widespread suffering among civilians, including displacement and humanitarian emergencies. The call for an interfaith prayer initiative signifies an attempt to unify religious communities in addressing these grievances and fostering peace. The Catholic Church’s engagement in this initiative further highlights its role in mitigating conflict and promoting reconciliation.
The CENCO’s engagement in the proposed interfaith prayer highlights the Catholic Church’s commitment not only to spiritual support but also to the broader humanitarian concerns in the DRC. By encouraging prayers for peace for all affected parties, including soldiers, displaced individuals, and families, the Church aims to foster a culture of reconciliation. Ultimately, the initiative underscores a collective desire for cessation of violence and restoration of peace in the DRC.
