Over 400,000 people have been displaced this year due to ongoing conflict in eastern DRC. Fighting between the Congolese army and M23 rebels has intensified, raising concerns over a potential regional war. The UN has urgently called for an end to hostilities as the humanitarian crisis deepens in areas like Goma.

As conflict persists in the eastern regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the United Nations reports that over 400,000 individuals have been displaced this year alone, a figure that has nearly doubled in recent weeks. Fighting has intensified between the Congolese army and M23 rebel forces, which are allegedly supported by Rwandan troops. The ongoing violence has caused a severe humanitarian crisis, particularly affecting the provincial capital, Goma, which is home to around one million residents.

Clashes erupted close to Goma early Friday, approximately 20 kilometers away, prompting reports of fierce exchanges of gunfire between the opposing forces. In a recent UN briefing, spokesperson Matthew Saltmarsh highlighted the gravity of the situation, indicating an alarming rise in displacements. The situation has drawn serious concern from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres who urges an immediate halt to the hostilities, highlighting the devastating impact on civilians and the potential for a broader regional conflict.

On that Friday, heavy fighting was reported in the town of Sake, located about 20 kilometers west of Goma. Air support from the Congolese army was deployed, with reports of helicopter attacks against M23 positions. Meanwhile, medical units have been actively providing care to the injured at Goma’s hospitals, with more than 70 casualties treated in one day. Civilians continue to flee the violence, seeking refuge in the city as the crisis escalates.

The civil unrest in eastern DRC is not new; it has persisted for three decades and even included the M23 group’s prior occupation of Goma in 2012. International diplomacy has struggled to resolve the ongoing conflict, with previous peace negotiations yielding little success. Recent attempts to mediate have also faltered, emphasizing the need for effective diplomatic intervention, especially in the light of Turkey’s offering to facilitate talks between DRC and Rwanda.

The situation remains dire with security forces from the Southern African Development Community bolstering the Congolese army’s defenses. The conflict has compelled humanitarian organizations to respond to the increased needs of the displaced population, highlighting the urgent requirement for international attention.

The eastern region of the DRC has been a hotspot for violence and instability for many years, with various militant groups, including M23, engaging in armed conflict. This latest surge in violence stems from a breakdown in peace negotiations between Congolese authorities and M23 rebels, with accusations of Rwandan support for the rebel group. The resulting humanitarian crisis has led to significant displacement and a dire need for humanitarian assistance and conflict resolution efforts.

The ongoing conflict in eastern DRC has resulted in over 400,000 displacements this year due to escalating clashes between the Congolese military and M23 forces. With concerns about a wider regional war, the UN has called for an immediate cessation of hostilities. The situation underscores the critical need for effective diplomatic efforts to address the humanitarian crisis and establish lasting peace in the region.
