Fatal Drone Strike on Sudan Hospital Highlights Darfur Crisis
A drone attack on el-Fasher’s Saudi Hospital has killed at least 30 patients, with reports suggesting a total of over 70 fatalities. The RSF and the Sudanese army are locked in conflict, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. Healthcare facilities are predominantly non-operational, and famine conditions are reportedly worsening.
A recent drone strike on the Saudi Hospital in el-Fasher, Sudan’s Darfur region, resulted in the tragic deaths of at least 30 patients. The attack, which has yet to be attributed to a specific party, followed a prior strike by a Rapid Support Forces (RSF) drone on the same facility weeks earlier. Governor Mini Minawi reported the death toll could be over 70, including women and children, sharing disturbing visuals on social media.
Since April 2023, Sudan’s army has been engaged in intense conflict with the RSF, who control much of Darfur. In May, the RSF began besieging el-Fasher, and while army-aligned militias have made efforts to counter these incursions, the humanitarian situation has deteriorated severely. Attacks on healthcare facilities have proliferated, with organizations like Doctors Without Borders noting that the Saudi Hospital represents the only public facility capable of surgical procedures in the area. Up to 80% of healthcare facilities across Sudan have been rendered inoperative due to the ongoing conflict.
The drone attack exemplifies the worsening humanitarian crisis in Sudan, particularly in Darfur, where violence continues to impact vulnerable populations. The ongoing conflict has not only caused immense loss of life but has also decimated healthcare services. With famine spreading within displacement camps, urgent international intervention is necessary to address the dire conditions faced by the affected populations.
