Tragic Losses: Six African Peacekeepers Killed in DRC Clashes
Six peacekeepers from Malawi and South Africa were killed in clashes with M23 rebels in eastern DRC. Emmanuel Mlelemba, efforts are being made to repatriate the fallen soldiers for a dignified burial.
Meanwhile, the South African National Defense Union confirmed the death of three South African soldiers during confrontations with M23 rebels, which occurred as Defense Minister Angie Motshekga visited the region. Fourteen other South African troops sustained injuries. While the South African National Defense Force has yet to issue an official statement, a spokesperson indicated that further details will be forthcoming.
The South African contingent of approximately 2,900 soldiers is part of the Southern African Development Community Mission in Congo (SAMIDRC), which assists the Congolese government in combatting the M23 rebels and fostering stability in the volatile eastern provinces. The M23 group, alleged to have Rwandan support, has intensified its military operations, achieving significant territorial gains and threatening the city of Goma, the capital of North Kivu province.
As clashes between Congolese forces and the M23 rebels have increased since late last year, tens of thousands of civilians have fled their homes to escape the violence. Reports indicate that nearly 6 million individuals have succumbed to various conflicts in the DRC since 1996. Furthermore, the United Nations’ International Organization for Migration has reported that 7 million people remain internally displaced due to ongoing strife and natural disasters within the country.
The Democratic Republic of Congo has faced ongoing conflict and instability for decades, resulting in immense humanitarian crises.
