President Salva Kiir of South Sudan has urged calm after protests against Sudanese nationals turned violent, resulting in looting. The unrest followed unverified reports of the deaths of South Sudanese citizens in Sudan. Kiir highlighted the need for restraint as ongoing conflicts in the region strain resources and safety.
In response to escalating tensions, South Sudanese President Salva Kiir has called for restraint following a violent protest in Juba against Sudanese nationals. The demonstration erupted into looting, targeting Sudanese-owned shops after claims surfaced regarding the deaths of 29 South Sudanese individuals in Sudan’s Wad Madani. Police intervened by firing warning shots to disperse the rioters, although independent verification of the deaths remains unconfirmed.
South Sudan, which gained independence from Sudan in 2011, is plagued by chronic instability, violence, and extreme poverty. Recently, disastrous flooding and a significant influx of refugees fleeing the ongoing conflict in Sudan have worsened the situation. Tensions have heightened due to the violent conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which has created a humanitarian crisis affecting millions.
President Kiir emphasized the importance of clarity over anger, urging the public to allow both governments to address the issue amicably. The situation in South Sudan necessitates careful management to prevent further violence, particularly given the historical context of its independence from Sudan and current refugee challenges.
