Daniel Noboa’s Promises of Security Position Him Favorably in Ecuador’s Presidential Race

Ecuador’s presidential election features incumbent Daniel Noboa, who promises to combat crime with military support, and challenger Luisa Gonzalez, advocating for broader social reforms. Noboa claims a 15% reduction in violent deaths under his leadership, while Gonzalez emphasizes social justice. Voter turnout, fraud prevention, and legislative changes remain critical issues as the election approaches.

Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa is poised to secure a victory in the upcoming presidential election, with voters largely supporting his crime-fighting initiatives, despite criticisms from opponents regarding the sufficiency of his efforts. Since taking office in 2023, Noboa has deployed military forces to combat rising violence, claiming a 15% reduction in violent deaths and improved conditions within prisons, including the apprehension of significant gang leaders.

Noboa’s election opponents have argued for more comprehensive measures to tackle drug-related crime, suggesting that some proposals may face difficulties in securing legislative approval. However, Noboa insists that he is already addressing concerns related to border and port security, asserting that his administration has made tangible progress. In a closing rally, he urged voters to embrace the changes by reclaiming their dreams.

Supporters, such as 20-year-old student Kevin Galarza, express confidence in Noboa’s capability to deliver hope and solutions, believing he can win outright in the first round. Polling data indicates that Noboa might achieve more than 50% of the vote or, alternatively, secure 40% with a significant lead over his closest rival.

Some surveys suggest the possibility of a runoff election against leftist candidate Luisa Gonzalez, who competed against Noboa in 2023. Both candidates have encouraged voters to monitor the counting process to prevent fraud. Gonzalez vows to implement rigorous military and police operations to combat crime, along with measures addressing social justice in the most affected regions.

Gonzalez, a protégé of former President Rafael Correa, emphasizes the need for social equity while questioning Noboa’s strategies. Correa himself believes Gonzalez has the potential to outperform Noboa in the polls. Gonzalez’s supporters highlight her coherent plans for improving safety and addressing the critical needs of the populace, including security, employment, health, and education.

Noboa, facing tension with his vice president that nearly disrupted his campaign, introduced last-minute policies aimed at garnering voter support including assistance for returning migrants and a tariff proposal on Mexican goods. Voters will also participate in the election of 151 members of the national assembly.

Both candidates are set to cast their votes in their respective provinces, with Noboa voting in Olon and Gonzalez in Canuto.

The upcoming presidential election in Ecuador presents a critical choice for voters between incumbent President Daniel Noboa and challenger Luisa Gonzalez. Noboa touts his administration’s achievements in reducing crime through military deployment, while Gonzalez advocates for more expansive social justice measures. The election results will shape the future of security and governance in Ecuador, with significant implications for its policy direction.
