The 2023 Global Innovation Index (GII) evaluates global innovation trends amidst an economically uncertain climate and ranks the world’s most innovative economies among 132 nations. This year’s survey particularly highlights the top 100 science and technology innovation clusters, showcasing the evolving landscape of global innovation.
Switzerland continues to hold the title of the most innovative economy for the 13th consecutive year. Close behind are Sweden, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Singapore. Notably, Sweden has ascended to second place, surpassing the United States, while Singapore has entered the top five, leading among economies in Southeast Asia, East Asia, and Oceania (SEAO).
The top science and technology clusters in 2023 include Tokyo–Yokohama, followed by Shenzhen–Hong Kong–Guangzhou, Seoul, Beijing, and Shanghai-Suzhou. China now possesses the largest number of these clusters globally, overtaking the United States in terms of the density of inventors and scientific authors located in these areas.
The Global Innovation Tracker delves into key trends regarding innovation investments, tracking the pace of technological advancements, adoption rates, and their socioeconomic impacts. Despite ongoing global challenges stemming from elevated inflation, rising interest rates, and geopolitical conflicts following the COVID-19 pandemic, breakthrough technologies continue to emerge, offering novel opportunities, albeit with a relatively low societal impact.
