Guyana Introduces Enhanced Ten-Year Passport with Advanced Security Features
Guyana has launched a new Ten-Year Passport with improved security features, available from February 10. Citizens can choose between five-year and ten-year validity and will soon be able to apply online. Biometric enrollment will enhance the security of the application process, ensuring greater integrity in passport issuance.
The Ministry of Home Affairs of Guyana has officially launched the new Ten-Year Passport, available to citizens as of February 10. This initiative supports President Irfaan Ali’s goal to modernize public services and enhance the travel experience for Guyanese citizens. The upgraded passport features advanced security, including an embedded electronic chip, meeting international travel document standards.
The new passport’s design embodies the essence of Guyana, showcasing national unity and cultural diversity. Citizens can now select between a five-year passport priced at G$6,000 and the new ten-year passport for G$12,000. This flexibility allows applicants to choose a validity that aligns with their individual travel needs.
To streamline the application process, the government plans to introduce an online system, although manual submissions at passport offices will remain in effect for the interim. This new system aims to reduce wait times and enhance the overall application experience. Additionally, biometric enrollment, including fingerprinting, will be mandatory for all applicants to ensure the integrity of the passport issuance process.
Individuals who submitted passport applications before February 7, 2025, will receive the older passport version, while those applying after February 10 will be issued the new e-passport. The Ministry is also reviewing the replacement process for lost or damaged passports and considering measures to mitigate fraudulent claims, such as extending waiting periods for replacements. Citizens are encouraged to remain patient during this transition, as updates regarding the online application platform will be forthcoming.
The launch of Guyana’s new Ten-Year Passport marks a significant enhancement in the country’s passport security and application processes. With options for both five and ten-year validity periods, the initiative aims to provide citizens with greater flexibility. Additionally, the introduction of an online application system and biometric security measures underscores the government’s commitment to efficient public service and secure travel documentation.
