He insisted that addressing the root causes of terrorism—such as economic deprivation, social injustice, and unresolved conflicts—is vital to achieving long-term success against terror, rather than merely focusing on its manifestations.
Additionally, he called for reforms within the UN’s counter-terrorism framework, advocating for updated sanctions that are responsive to contemporary challenges. He stressed the importance of tackling new terrorist methods that utilize cyber tools, including the dark web and cryptocurrency, which facilitate radicalization, terror financing, and misinformation.
In concluding his remarks, Ambassador Akram urged for a broader approach to counter-terrorism that encompasses rising extremist ideologies, such as those espoused by violent nationalist and far-right groups.
