A series of significant earthquakes were reported recently, including a 5.1-magnitude tremor in Morocco and a 5.9-magnitude quake in Vanuatu. Following these, a 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck the Cayman Islands, leading to a transient tsunami warning for Mexico, which has since been lifted. Seismic activity remains a point of concern with multiple events recorded across different locations since early February.
On February 10, a 5.1-magnitude earthquake occurred in Morocco, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The earthquake was located in Chefchaouen at a depth of 10 kilometers (approximately 6.2 miles) and prompted 420 reports from individuals who felt the tremors at the time.
This seismic event followed a 5.9-magnitude earthquake in Vanuatu on the same day, which was centered in Port-Vila at a depth of 18 kilometers (around 11.9 miles).
Prior to these incidents, a more significant 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck the Cayman Islands on February 8, with its epicenter in George Town, also at a depth of 10 kilometers. A tsunami warning was briefly issued along the Mexican coast but was rescinded two hours later.
According to the National Weather Service Warning Center, “With the latest modeling and information, the tsunami threat has passed. There are no alerts posted for the United States or International Partners. The tsunami threat has passed. Unusual currents may be noticed in some areas. Exercise normal caution.”
Additionally, preceding the Cayman Islands earthquake was a 3.4-magnitude earthquake in California on February 7, centered in Petrolia at a depth of 10 kilometers. This event followed two earlier earthquakes: a 2.9-magnitude tremor in Petrolia on February 6, and a 4.3-magnitude quake in Alaska on February 5, centered in Sustina at a depth of 5.4 kilometers.
In summary, a series of earthquakes of varying magnitudes have been recorded recently, notably in Morocco, Vanuatu, the Cayman Islands, and California. The earthquake activity indicates heightened seismic occurrences across different regions, yet the immediate tsunami threats have been nullified, assuring safety for coastal areas.
