Iran Engages with New Syrian Government After Assad’s Ouster

Iran has received communication from Syria’s new government following the ousting of Bashar al-Assad, indicating a potential re-establishment of ties. Iran has announced it has received messages from the newly established government in Syria following the ousting of Bashar al-Assad. Tehran’s envoy for Syrian affairs, Mohammad Reza Raouf Sheibani, confirmed the indirect communications with Damascus but did not reveal the intermediary country involved in facilitating this dialogue. He noted, however, that Iran had also received communications from Syria.

Sheibani’s comments came in response to remarks made by Syria’s foreign minister, Asaad al-Shaibani, regarding the restored communications with Iran. He stated, “Our view of the developments in Syria and the restoration of relations with Damascus is forward-looking,” indicating Iran’s intention to thoughtfully monitor the evolving political landscape in Syria.

Previously, Iran had been a key backer of Assad during the Syrian civil war and had evacuated its diplomatic mission in December after the interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa led the ousting of the Assad government. Sharaa emphasized that Syria should maintain strong ties with Iran, which should be based on mutual respect and non-interference in each other’s internal affairs.

Sheibani, who has served as Iran’s ambassador to Syria, reiterated Tehran’s stance that the future of Syria should solely be determined by the Syrian people. He asserted, “The stability and peace of Syria are of particular importance to us, and we are against any foreign interference in the affairs of this country.”
