UN Chief Urges Immediate Action to Prevent Escalation in DR Congo Conflict

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has raised concerns about the escalating fighting in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), particularly regarding the M23 rebels’ advances in South Kivu. Amid urgent calls to maintain peace and preserve territorial integrity, the situation poses significant threats to regional stability, prompting reactions from the AU and the European Union.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has sounded the alarm regarding the escalating conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), emphasizing the importance of preserving the nation’s territorial integrity amid advances by M23 fighters. During a recent African Union summit in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, he declared that all efforts must be made to avert a regional escalation as M23 fighters continue their offensive in the eastern provinces, particularly in Bukavu.
Reports have indicated M23 forces have taken control of Kavumu Airport in Bukavu, amidst fierce fighting in South Kivu. Guterres warned that this ongoing violence poses a significant threat not just to the DRC but to the entire region. He remarked, “The fighting that is raging in South Kivu – as a result of the continuation of the M23 offensive – threatens to push the entire region over the precipice.”
Despite the growing concern from international organizations, the African Union has faced criticism for its lack of decisive action while local media reported explosions and casualties in Bukavu as the fighting intensified. M23 commanders claimed they are working to secure Bukavu, following military personnel fleeing from Kavumu airport. The group now controls strategic points in both South and North Kivu, areas rich in minerals, further complicating the conflict.
Rwanda has denied supporting M23, yet a UN report indicates its military involvement, suggesting Rwandan forces may be present in the DRC. Meanwhile, the outgoing chair of the AU emphasized the necessity of adhering to the ceasefire agreements, stating that there is a “general mobilisation” among African nations to halt the violence. However, neither Rwanda’s nor the DRC’s leadership attended pivotal meetings aimed at resolving the crisis.
During a recent conference in Munich, Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi called for actions against Rwanda, labeling its actions as “expansionist ambitions.” In response to the advancing conflict, the European Union has indicated it is assessing various options to address the situation. The EU expressed its alarm regarding M23’s takeover of key locations, highlighting that violations against the DRC’s sovereignty would not go unanswered.
The ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo poses severe risks to both the nation and surrounding regions, with alarming territorial losses by M23 fighters. The international community, including the UN and EU, is increasingly calling for accountability and action against Rwanda’s alleged involvement, while the African Union faces scrutiny over its response to the crisis. Urgent measures are essential to prevent further escalation and protect regional stability.
