Syria Reaffirms Unity and State Control Over Arms at Dialogue Conference
Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara reaffirmed Syria’s commitment to unity and state control of weaponry at the National Dialogue Conference in Damascus. He emphasized the need for national reconstruction and civil peace, while warning against importing foreign governance systems. The conference aimed to formulate recommendations for the country’s future through inclusive discussions among 600 participants.
Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara addressed the National Dialogue Conference held in Damascus, asserting that Syria will not accept division and emphasizing that the state must maintain a monopoly on weapons. In his remarks, al-Shara acknowledged the revolution’s role in saving Syria but cautioned that substantial challenges remain. He remarked, “Syria today has returned to its people after being stolen away in a moment of carelessness,” highlighting the country’s current state of reconstruction after conflicts.
Al-Shara described the unification and control of arms as a duty and highlighted the importance of civil peace among citizens. He signaled awareness of external and internal dissent regarding the celebratory atmosphere following the revolution, stressing the need for vigilance as Syria undertakes the rebuilding process. In addition, he mentioned that authorities have prioritized pursuing individuals responsible for crimes against the Syrian populace.
On the subject of future governance in Syria, al-Shara cautioned against adopting unsuitable systems, stating, “We should not import systems that do not suit the country’s condition, nor should we turn societies into laboratories to implement political dreams.” The National Dialogue Conference saw the participation of around 600 Syrian figures, marking a crucial moment in establishing foundations for Syria’s future.
As noted by Al-Jazeera correspondent Omar Al-Haj, the session was pivotal for proceeding beyond introductory discussions, focusing mainly on constitutional matters. A broad range of attendees, including constitutional experts and civil society representatives, reflected the diverse makeup of the Syrian populace.
Participants separated into six committees dedicated to addressing various transitional topics, including governance and public freedoms, with committee work remaining closed to the media. A final statement encapsulating recommendations for the Presidency will be produced at the conference’s conclusion, reinforcing a commitment to inclusivity, as emphasized by the preparatory committee’s efforts to involve all segments of Syrian society.
