Jordan’s King Abdullah and Syrian President Alsharaa have agreed to strengthen border security to combat arms and drug trafficking. They emphasized the need for coordination, particularly in light of challenges faced during the Assad regime. The dialogue also included discussions about rebuilding Syria and addressing energy shortages.

Jordan’s King Abdullah and Syrian President Ahmed Alsharaa convened on Wednesday in Amman to enhance cooperation on border security. The leaders aim to address the pressing issues of arms and drug trafficking that have plagued the Jordan-Syria border, particularly during the time of the Bashar al-Assad regime, where Jordan experienced significant challenges in managing smuggling activities. The Jordanian monarch also condemned Israel’s recent airstrikes on southern Damascus, viewing them as a continual threat to regional stability.

During their discussions, the leaders emphasized the necessity of coordination between their nations to effectively mitigate smuggling activities. Jordan has attributed the surge in drug and weapon trafficking to pro-Iranian militias operating in southern Syria during Assad’s rule. President Alsharaa expressed his commitment to eradicating these illicit trade activities, aiming to restore security along the border.

This visit represents President Alsharaa’s third diplomatic trip abroad since assuming leadership following the ousting of the Assad regime. His previous engagements included meetings in Saudi Arabia and Türkiye. Jordan, which initially hosted an international conference on Syria shortly after Assad’s departure, has consistently advocated for a peaceful political transition in Syria to prevent further instability in the region.

King Abdullah praised the outcome of a significant national dialogue conference held in Damascus, suggesting it signifies a critical step towards reconstruction and meeting the aspirations of the Syrian populace. Additionally, Jordanian officials have expressed their readiness to assist Syria in overcoming its energy shortages, offering to supply vital electricity and gas resources.

The agreement between Jordan and Syria to bolster border security reflects a mutual commitment to combat illegal trafficking and enhance regional stability. The leaders’ dialogue indicates a positive shift towards rebuilding Syria amid ongoing challenges, and Jordan’s willingness to assist highlights its critical role in fostering peace and cooperation in the region.
