The General Directorate of Migration (DGM) released its annual report for 2024, revealing that 479,908 Haitians returned to Haiti. This figure includes 272,713 deportations, 167,069 repatriations (including 105,644 voluntary returns). Additionally, 106 foreign nationals, including Americans and Cubans, were expelled from the Dominican Republic during this period.
October 2024 recorded the highest monthly expulsion and repatriation figures, with 40,715 Haitians returned to Haiti, approaching the government’s goal of expelling 10,000 irregular migrants weekly. However, subsequent months witnessed a decline in these numbers, with November and December reporting 28,703 and 25,700 returns, respectively.
The DGM also updated the “Intelligent System for the Automation of Interdiction Trucks,” incorporating geolocation devices, entry mechanisms for detention facilities, and internal surveillance systems. Additionally, transition centers in key locations were either renovated or built, ensuring dignified and humane conditions for temporarily housed immigrants.
Throughout the year, a total of 3,316 migratory situation control operations were conducted, collaborating with the Dominican Army and National Police, emphasizing the government’s commitment to maintain migration order while respecting human rights.
In summary, the 2024 report from the DGM highlights significant repatriation efforts, showing that nearly 480,000 Haitians returned, primarily due to deportations. The Dominican authorities emphasized strict control over immigration while aiming to uphold human rights within renovated facilities. The operations conducted reflect a structured approach to managing migration, demonstrating a balance between enforcement and humanitarian standards.
