Action Black, Colombia’s Leading Fitness Brand, Expands into U.S.

Action Black, a leading Colombian boutique fitness brand, is expanding into the U.S., with locations in New York City and plans for Miami. Known for its nightclub-inspired fitness ambiance, the brand provides a variety of group classes in separate rooms, aiming to offer an all-inclusive fitness experience. There are ambitious plans for further international expansion, targeting numerous countries and additional U.S. states.
Action Black, a prominent boutique fitness brand from Colombia, is setting its sights on expansion into the United States, specifically in New York City. Famous for its slogan, “We’re not a (f*ng) gym. We’re the most revolutionary training model in the world,” Action Black’s unique nightclub-inspired ambiance is a key aspect of its appeal. The brand offers a variety of group fitness modalities, housed within distinct rooms that cater to boxing, strength training, cycling, and high-intensity interval training (HIIT).
Founded in 2015 by Wilder Zapata Torres, former reality television star turned fitness executive, Action Black boasts over 20 locations in Colombia alongside studios in Spain and Mexico. Plans to expand to Portugal and Brazil are also in motion. Having recently opened its inaugural U.S. location in Tribeca, New York City, the brand continues to grow with a second site in NoMad.
Oscar Toro, an investor with Action Black, noted the positive reception the brand has received worldwide, stating, “Everywhere we go, people love it.” With its newest facility set to launch in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, this location will be significantly larger, offering various amenities, including a lounge and co-working spaces, and is expected to host community events. The brand has future plans for additional sites in Manhattan’s Financial District and Dumbo in Brooklyn, as well as a new studio in Miami’s Brickell neighborhood.
Action Black aims to differentiate itself in a saturated boutique fitness market through its unique blend of nightclub aesthetics and diverse fitness offerings. Each studio is characterized by dimly lit workout rooms accentuated with vibrant neon lights, creating an immersive atmosphere. Instructors lead each class, while in-class televisions assist members to follow along effectively.
The Tribeca location, for example, features several dedicated rooms for different classes such as Jab, a boxing class, and Savage, a HIIT bootcamp. Members benefit from the “garage,” a complimentary space equipped with strength training facilities. With a monthly membership fee of $299, Action Black is currently promoting a buy-one-get-one-free initiative for new members, alongside free trials and class packages.
Targeting fitness enthusiasts in their 20s, 30s, and 40s, approximately 70% of Action Black’s members are female. The brand intends to establish itself further in competitive markets like New York and Florida, with aspirations to expand into North Carolina and Texas. Overall, Action Black seeks to achieve international growth, aiming to open 135 new gyms globally, including in Colombia, Spain, and Mexico, with future prospects in locations such as Shenzhen, China, and Dubai, UAE.
Action Black is poised for significant expansion in the U.S. market, capitalizing on its unique fitness approach and nightclub-inspired atmosphere. With established locations in New York City and plans for further growth in various states and internationally, the brand is leveraging strong consumer interest to penetrate competitive markets. The combination of diverse fitness modalities and an engaging environment positions Action Black as a standout in boutique fitness.
