Brazil Hosts First BRICS Sherpas Meeting, Emphasizing Multilateralism

Brazil hosted the first BRICS Sherpas meeting in Brasilia, led by Minister Mauro Vieira. He emphasized the need for stronger multilateralism amidst global changes and highlighted BRICS’s role in fostering a more equitable world order. The meeting involves extensive discussions on promoting cooperation among emerging economies, addressing global inequalities, and prioritizing various key development areas under Brazil’s presidency.
On Tuesday, Brazilian Foreign Affairs Minister Mauro Vieira commenced the inaugural meeting of BRICS Sherpas in Brasilia, marking Brazil’s tenure as the rotating president of the bloc. He emphasized that to address the current crisis in multilateralism, the answer lies in fostering increased multilateralism that is both stronger and more inclusive.
Minister Vieira highlighted the significant shifts occurring in the international order and the inadequacy of existing institutions to adapt to these changes. He emphasized that emerging economies are advocating for a more considerable role in global decision-making.
Vieira articulated that BRICS is pivotal in promoting a fair, inclusive, and sustainable global order. He stated, “A multipolar world is not only an emerging reality, but a shared objective,” urging the necessity for a rebalanced global system rooted in equity and representation, which reflects the aspirations of the Global South.
The gathering at the Itamaraty Palace consists of two days of discussions focused on establishing a multipolar world order, consistent with Brazil’s presidency objectives. This is the first Sherpas meeting since the expansion of BRICS, which now includes Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Iran, and Indonesia, alongside associated nations such as Belarus, Bolivia, and Nigeria.
Minister Vieira underlined the importance of redefining global governance to ensure that developing countries take on leading roles rather than acting as bystanders. He cautioned against the protectionism that exacerbates inequalities and asserted the need for BRICS to support a balanced multilateral trade system that caters to the Global South’s needs.
Furthermore, he highlighted the necessity of advancing alternative financial mechanisms, such as the New BRICS Development Bank, which is crucial for financing infrastructure and sustainable projects in emerging economies. Brazil’s presidency will emphasize cooperation with the Global South across six key areas, including health, trade, climate change, and artificial intelligence.
The second day of the BRICS Sherpas meeting will feature a special session with Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva followed by a summary of the discussions in the afternoon, thereby concluding this significant event for the global agenda.
The first BRICS Sherpas meeting under Brazil’s presidency underscores the bloc’s commitment to promoting a multipolar world order that reflects the needs and aspirations of emerging economies. Emphasizing inclusive multilateralism and economic cooperation, the discussions focused on redefining global governance to empower developing countries. The outcomes of this meeting are expected to pave the way for progress in critical areas affecting the Global South.
