Israel’s Attorney General has launched a criminal investigation into alleged improper connections between Prime Minister Netanyahu’s office and Qatar. On February 28, 2025, Israel’s Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara disclosed the initiation of a criminal investigation targeting potential unethical connections between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office and officials from Qatar. This investigation arises amidst heightened concerns regarding national security and the safeguarding of classified information.
Qatar has played a critical role in mediating ceasefire initiatives concerning Israel and Hamas and has also assisted in negotiating the release of Israeli hostages. Despite these diplomatic engagements, Israel and Qatar do not share formal diplomatic relations, which complicates their interactions further.
The inquiry will involve collaboration between police forces and the Shin Bet, Israel’s internal security agency. This decision was prompted by Shin Bet’s findings related to interactions between senior personnel within Netanyahu’s administration and Qatari officials, suggesting the potential for sensitive information to be compromised.
Baharav-Miara noted that her decision to initiate this inquiry was influenced by alarming revelations presented to her in a meeting earlier that day, which discussed connections between individuals from the Prime Minister’s Office and entities associated with Qatar.
This investigation has emerged after local media reports implicated advisers to Netanyahu, including Yonatan Urich and Yisrael Einhorn, alongside former spokesman Eli Feldstein, in alleged business dealings with Qatar. Eli Feldstein previously faced charges in November 2024 for leaking classified information in an effort to undermine ongoing hostage negotiations with Hamas.
