Latter-day Saints Volunteers Engage in Humanitarian Efforts Across South America

Latter-day Saints in South America engaged in emergency response efforts inspired by the Savior’s example. Volunteers assisted flood victims in Brazil by delivering essential supplies, collaborated with local organizations in Paraguay to address food scarcity, and refurbished a community building in Bolivia, demonstrating their commitment to service and charity.

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from various nations in South America have come together to provide disaster relief, inspired by the Savior’s example of service. In Brazil, volunteers distributed food and essential supplies after floods devastated regions. In Paraguay, Church members collaborated with local organizations to package food kits for communities facing hunger. In Bolivia, volunteers refurbished a key community building, promoting love and compassion among the most vulnerable.

In Brazil, following severe flooding and landslides across states such as Minas Gerais, São Paulo, and Paraná, the Church mobilized quickly to assist those affected. Significant contributions included over 2,000 basic food baskets, 3,000 gallons of drinking water, 2,500 hygiene kits, 220 mattresses, and 138 blankets. For instance, in Coronel Fabriciano, the Church provided 890 food baskets and 1,780 gallons of water.

Church intervention was also notable in Ipatinga, where 500 food baskets and essential goods were sent following a tragic loss of life due to the storms. Similarly, assistance was given to additional cities like Paranaguá, Campinas, and Jundiaí, all experiencing significant challenges due to the flooding.

In Paraguay, Church members, alongside volunteers from the Social Pastoral, collaboratively packaged 3,000 food kits aimed at supporting families in the Chaco region, which suffers from food scarcity. Their work is part of a larger solidarity campaign initiated to alleviate hunger among vulnerable populations in communities such as San Eugenio de Mazenod and San Leonardo de Fischat.

In Bolivia, around 238 volunteers gathered to refurbish the José Soria Welcome Center, using resources such as paint and putty. The project, which took place on December 7 and 8, involved cleaning, painting, and organizing the space to better serve the local community. Stake President Carlos Vásquez noted the collective effort reflected Jesus Christ’s humble and service-oriented nature.

During the refurbishment, special gifts were prepared for children, acknowledging educators’ dedication to their care. This initiative highlights the ongoing commitment of Church members to embody the teachings of Jesus Christ through acts of service and compassion in their respective communities.
