Migori County and Tanzania Collaborate to Combat Border Smuggling

Migori County Commissioner Mutua Kisilu announced a partnership with Tanzanian security agencies to combat counterfeit and illegal goods crossing their shared border. He highlighted the loss of revenue due to smuggling and urged local residents to support security measures. Significant seizures of hazardous materials have been made, reflecting the ongoing crackdown on contraband.

Migori County Commissioner Mutua Kisilu announced that local security agencies will collaborate with their counterparts in Tanzania to address the issue of counterfeit and illegal products crossing the border. He emphasized that the nation is losing significant revenue due to these illicit goods that enter through unofficial routes instead of designated border points, particularly at Isebania and Muhuru Bay.

During a statement made from his office, Commissioner Kisilu urged residents of Migori County, particularly those living near the border, to display patriotism by supporting security efforts to combat the influx of contraband. He stated, “We need to be alert to protect our country and we should not take part in assisting foreigners to cross over with the illegal goods that are not accounted for by our KRA officers.”

Additionally, Kisilu confirmed ongoing cooperative initiatives with authorities from Tarime, Tanzania, aimed at ensuring enhanced security along the border. He revealed that the multi-agency security team has been actively engaged in crackdowns, which have resulted in significant seizures, including 200 kilograms of sodium cyanide and 400 kilograms of explosives that pose risks, especially to mining operations.

The Commissioner praised the collective efforts of the Migori multi-agency security team, highlighting that these operations are not intended to target any individuals but are crucial for safeguarding national interests.
