Türkiye Enhances Educational Opportunities for Sudanese Students Amid Conflict

Türkiye is providing educational support to Sudanese students affected by the civil war. Through the “Guest University Initiative,” students from El-Butana University have relocated to Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University, while other Sudanese institutions will also establish programs in Türkiye. The initiative aims to maintain educational continuity and strengthen international relations, with a focus on fostering future development in Sudan.
In light of the ongoing civil war in Sudan, Türkiye has stepped in to support education for displaced students. Coordinates by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK), students and faculty from El-Butana University have relocated to Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University in Türkiye. Additionally, the “Guest University Initiative” allows Sudan’s Bahri and El-Neelain Universities to set up programs at Selçuk University and Inönü University, respectively.
YÖK President Erol Özvar highlighted the significance of this initiative, stating it not only solidifies bilateral relations but serves as a pioneering example for the Islamic world. This program was designed to provide a supportive academic atmosphere for the influx of Sudanese scholars already present in these institutions. “Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University’s Sudanese students are now welcoming fellow academics and peers, continuing Türkiye’s tradition as a hub for education and research,” he remarked.
Since the onset of violent clashes on April 15, 2023, between Sudan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces, the conflict has resulted in devastating humanitarian crises, with thousands of deaths and millions requiring aid. El-Butana University faced significant destruction, prompting the Sudanese Ministry of Higher Education to seek assistance from YÖK. Özvar expressed a firm belief in the potential of Sudanese students, stating, “We will never accept the closure of universities.”
El-Butana University Rector Mohmoud Yacob Mohmoud recounted efforts to maintain education online, which were hindered by insufficient resources. He expressed deep gratitude for the collaboration with Türkiye, noting, “When we explained our situation, Türkiye was the first country to hear our plea, and we are incredibly thankful for their support.” He acknowledged the opportunity to enhance Sudan’s education through the knowledge gained in Türkiye.
Sudanese student Ferass Aiaaldeen Gahalrsoul Faragalla, now studying biochemistry, underscored the advantages of accessing advanced laboratories in Türkiye, stating, “Advanced laboratories and research centers will significantly enhance my practical studies.” He intends to leverage this knowledge for the betterment of his home country. Similarly, Rashida Ebrahim Hussein, an undergraduate veterinary student, shared her positive experience, declaring, “Coming to Türkiye was a fresh start for my academic journey.”
Türkiye’s efforts to support Sudanese students amid ongoing conflict demonstrate a commitment to education and humanitarian aid. Through the “Guest University Initiative,” students affected by the civil war can pursue their studies in a supportive environment. This collaboration likely enriches educational standards both in Türkiye and Sudan, fostering future leaders committed to their nations’ development.
