Barbados is looking to strengthen diplomatic ties with Togo to enhance business, cultural exchanges, and economic growth, according to Senator Chad Blackman, Minister in the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Investment. During a meeting with a Togolese delegation, he outlined strategies to utilize Togo’s robust infrastructure and burgeoning economy as a catalyst for Barbadian entrepreneurship.
Senator Blackman emphasized the need to identify and capitalize on opportunities available in Togo for local businesses, particularly encouraging young entrepreneurs to explore the fast-growing Togolese market. He stated, “These relationships of course are formalised at the government level, but it’s really now to unlock it for the benefit of the people.”
He articulated the importance of leveraging these new diplomatic relations to create tangible outcomes for citizens. Senator Blackman expressed the government’s enthusiasm, noting that Barbadians, especially in the private sector, should investigate how to access the Togolese market and ensure their goods can reach consumers in Togo.
The Senator highlighted Togo’s advanced port facilities in Lomé, which is the largest port in West Africa, capable of rapidly clearing cargo. The port’s efficiency, with the ability to move goods from ship to customer in just 12 minutes, presents significant logistical advantages for Barbadian businesses seeking to expand their reach.
Over the past decade, Lomé port has increased its cargo volume substantially, becoming a crucial regional trade hub competing with other ports in West Africa. Senator Blackman noted Togo’s historical significance as host to the Lomé Conventions, which established key trade agreements between the European Union and African, Caribbean, and Pacific nations.
In conclusion, Barbados is actively seeking to strengthen its diplomatic and trade relationship with Togo to foster economic growth and cultural exchange. By leveraging Togo’s advanced infrastructure and exploring new opportunities for local entrepreneurs, Barbados aims to unlock mutual benefits for both nations. This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to rekindling ties with Africa while promoting local businesses on a global scale.
