CARICOM Asserts Support for Guyana Against Venezuelan Intrusions

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has issued a statement regarding the escalating tensions between Guyana and Venezuela over territorial disputes. During the 48th Regular Meeting of the Heads of Government, leaders expressed serious concern over Venezuela’s recent declarations to conduct elections in Guyana’s Essequibo region, which Venezuela mistakenly claims to have annexed. They emphasize that such actions contravene international law, the UN Charter, and the 2023 Order of the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Heads of Government strongly condemned any attempts by Venezuela to interfere with Guyana’s sovereignty, particularly highlighting the illegitimacy of the announced elections for a so-called “Governor” and “Legislative Council” in the disputed region. Moreover, they denounced a recent armed attack by Venezuelan operatives against members of the Guyana Defence Force, underscoring the urgency of maintaining peace and security along the border.

The leaders acknowledged Venezuela’s recent submission of a counter-memorial regarding the validity of the 1899 Arbitral Award and encouraged timely further submissions in accordance with the Court’s schedule, emphasizing the importance of a judicial resolution to the territorial controversy.
