Congress Asserts Unity After Tharoor’s Remarks in Kerala Meeting

After a meeting in New Delhi, Congress leaders declared there is no internal conflict regarding Shashi Tharoor’s comments on the Kerala government. Deepa Dasmunshi and Ramesh Chennithala emphasized party unity ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. Tharoor defended his critiques of media interpretations after praising aspects of the Thiruvanathapuram administration and highlighted past Congress contributions to Kerala’s development.
Following a significant meeting in New Delhi, the Congress party has clarified that there is no rift concerning Shashi Tharoor’s remarks about the CPI(M)-led government in Kerala. Deepa Dasmunshi, Congress’ Kerala in-charge, asserted that the party remains united amidst rumors, alongside Tharoor at her side. This discussion preceded the upcoming Assembly elections in Kerala and aimed to solidify party cohesion.
Mr. Tharoor, a four-time MP, criticized the media for misconstruing his comments regarding having multiple ‘options to spend my time.’ In response to media reports, Dasmunshi stated, “What Shashi Tharoor ji has clarified has been done in a very straight manner and there is no confusion on that.” She emphasized that there is no faction within the Kerala unit supportive of the Left Democratic Front or the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Ramesh Chennithala, a senior member of Congress, reiterated this sentiment, assuring unity in the face of challenges from both the LDF and BJP. He expressed confidence that the united front would prevail in the 2026 elections, reinforcing their commitment to the welfare of the people of Kerala. Recent discussions included notable Congress leaders such as Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, focusing on political strategies for the state’s future.
Tharoor had recently faced backlash within the Congress party after commending Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the United States, which he believed yielded positive results for Indians. His article praising some aspects of the Pinarayi Vijayan-led government had drawn criticism, despite the Chief Minister celebrating the recognition as validation of his administration’s achievements. Tharoor defended his comments, asserting that political interests should not limit his opinions.
In summarizing his perspective on regional development, Tharoor stated that progress in the startup sector stemmed from initiatives taken by former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. He underlined the importance of acknowledging the groundwork laid by previous administrations while also promoting ongoing developments in Kerala’s industrial landscape.
The Congress party has reaffirmed its unity in Kerala amidst the Shashi Tharoor controversy following a key meeting in New Delhi. Party leaders emphasized collective efforts against the LDF and BJP, with promises of a united fight in the upcoming elections. Tharoor’s remarks, while controversial, were defended as crucial acknowledgments of the developmental strides initiated by past Congress leadership.
