The Hungarian government, led by Minister Péter Szijjártó, underscores its commitment to supporting Lebanese Christian communities, viewing their stability as crucial for Central European security. During the “Lebanon’s Future through Christian Eyes” conference, Szijjártó discussed ongoing challenges and the need for international cooperation to enable Syrian refugees to return and strengthen local communities through targeted investments.

The Hungarian government remains committed to supporting Christian communities in the Middle East, as underscored by Péter Szijjártó, Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade. During the conference “Lebanon’s Future through Christian Eyes,” he emphasized the dangers present in the world today and the significant impact of Middle Eastern stability on Central European security. Hungary seeks peace and stability in the region, recognizing Lebanon’s vital role and its substantial Christian population.

Szijjártó highlighted Hungary’s moral responsibility as a Christian nation to support persecuted Christian communities globally. He noted that Lebanese Christians face considerable challenges and affirmed Hungary’s goal to provide targeted assistance that empowers these communities to remain in their homeland rather than migrate elsewhere. The Hungary Helps program has invested tens of millions of dollars in aid to strengthen Christian communities in Lebanon.

The Minister elaborated on the necessary investments for community resilience, including job creation, educational institutions, social services, healthcare facilities, and places of worship. Over the past seven years, Hungary has implemented 38 development programs in Lebanon totaling nearly $20 million, including the restoration of nearly 100 historic Christian churches. Hungary expresses its readiness to maintain and expand these initiatives.

A pivotal concern for the future of Lebanon, according to the Minister, is the timely return of Syrian refugees. He urged international cooperation to facilitate this process following over a decade of instability affecting the region. Szijjártó called for the creation of essential political, security, and economic conditions to alleviate the burden borne by Lebanon.

The objective of the conference was to establish a sustainable development mechanism for Lebanon that prioritizes its Christian communities. This initiative demands significant resources, and Hungary is prepared to contribute. The Minister expressed hope that members of the Lebanese diaspora, business leaders, organizations, and international allies would contribute to this long-term support system, which Hungary is willing to host in Budapest.

In conclusion, Hungary’s commitment to supporting Christian communities in Lebanon underscores its belief in the importance of regional stability for Central European security. The government emphasizes local empowerment and sustainable development, seeking to create an environment that enables these communities to thrive amidst ongoing challenges. By facilitating the return of Syrian refugees and fostering collaboration among various stakeholders, Hungary aspires to build a brighter future for Lebanon.
