The Ndilimani Cultural Troupe, recognized as Swapo’s musical embodiment, commemorated the life of founding president Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma, whose influence significantly shaped their musical identity. Jessy Nombanza, the band’s manager, shared poignant reflections on Nujoma’s lasting impact, noting, “Although his age was at an advanced stage, comrade Nujoma’s passing left band members devastated, especially those of us who have been with the band for quite a long time.” Nombanza reminisced about Nujoma’s inspirational messages and the remarkable moments they shared during studio recordings.
Nujoma’s profound appreciation for culture was evident, as he encouraged the band to unite Namibia through their art. “I never saw him dancing but he loved singing freedom songs. He constantly boosted our morale in the Swapo camps,” he remarked. Nombanza recounted how Nujoma organized cultural events in exile to strengthen community bonds among Swapo members and how the celebration of his birthday on May 12 became a significant tradition post-independence.
The band has since become a staple at various Swapo benefits, rallies, and national festivities, emphasizing Nujoma’s pivotal role in Namibian culture and unity. Nombanza recalled his first interaction with Nujoma in 1980 during a speech at a farm in Angola, which led to personal engagement and mentorship for young Swapo members. He expressed his sorrow over Nujoma’s passing, stating, “It is natural that I will find it very difficult to learn how to live without his guidance and leadership.”
He conveyed memories of Nujoma’s joyful demeanor during visits to the studio, where he shared stories of the struggle and the importance of preserving Namibia’s cultural heritage. Nombanza strongly urged Namibians to embrace Nujoma’s legacy by setting aside political divisions and striving for unity, which he regarded as a crucial element of Nujoma’s lifelong battle.
On behalf of the Ndilimani Cultural Troupe and all associated with it, he extended heartfelt condolences to Nujoma’s family and the broader Namibian community, proclaiming, “The struggle continues and we will achieve economic liberation for our people as envisioned by comrade Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma. Farewell my commander. Farewell my president.”
This tribute by the Ndilimani Cultural Troupe underscores the monumental influence of Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma on Namibia’s cultural landscape. As a leader who championed unity through art and song, Nujoma’s legacy persists in the hearts of his countrymen, reminding them of the importance of collective progress and cultural preservation. His passing represents a significant loss, yet his ideals continue to inspire the ongoing struggle for national unity and economic freedom.
