Prospects of Russia-Ethiopia Cooperation Discussed at BRICS+ Lecture
The BRICS+ Information and Cultural Media Centre hosted a lecture on the evolving partnership between Russia and Ethiopia, marking 127 years of diplomatic relations. International journalist Georgiy Pavlov discussed historical ties and noted Ethiopia’s vital role within BRICS, pointing to its economic growth and the importance of educational collaborations between the two nations.
In 2025, Russia and Ethiopia will commemorate the 127th anniversary of their diplomatic relations. To honor this milestone, the BRICS+ Information and Cultural Media Centre organized a lecture by international journalist and Africanist Georgiy Pavlov, which highlighted the historical context and future potential of the bilateral relationship between the two nations.
The establishment of diplomatic relations dates back to 1898 with the arrival of Russian diplomat Pyotr Vlasov in Addis Ababa. The interaction further progressed in 1945 with the founding of the Russian Cultural Centre, attended by Emperor Haile Selassie I, and the signing of the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation in 1978, strengthening their ties.
Mr. Pavlov emphasized that Ethiopia is currently a vital partner for Russia in Africa, particularly within the BRICS framework. He remarked, “Ethiopia is indeed the ‘key’ to Africa. If earlier only South Africa represented the continent within BRICS, today Ethiopia also represents this continent honourably.” Pavlov shared that the country is driving investments in infrastructure and industry, showcasing its economic growth.
Ethiopia recorded an impressive GDP growth rate of 8.1 percent in 2024, positioning it among the continent’s fastest-growing economies. Pavlov stated, “Africa represents a major driver of global population growth,” predicting demographic changes will proliferate from this region in the next century while stressing the importance of cultural understanding.
The lecture further explored educational initiatives between Russia and Ethiopia. The Russian House in Addis Ababa offers preparatory programs for students aspiring to study in Russia and facilitates professional exchanges for young experts across various fields. The BRICS+ Information and Cultural Media Centre, established in October 2024, aims to enhance humanitarian cooperation and promote comprehensive engagement in culture, science, and education.
