Việt Nam’s Commitment to Global Disarmament and Nuclear Non-Proliferation

Ambassador Mai Phan Dũng of Việt Nam expressed the nation’s strong support for disarmament and nuclear non-proliferation at the Conference on Disarmament (CD) in Geneva. GENEVA — Ambassador Mai Phan Dũng, the Permanent Representative of Việt Nam in Geneva, emphasized Việt Nam’s unwavering support for disarmament and the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons at the recent high-level session of the Conference on Disarmament (CD) held in Geneva, Switzerland, from February 24 to 26.
Ambassador Dũng highlighted the importance Việt Nam places on the CD, regarding it as the primary multilateral platform essential for global disarmament efforts. He noted that Việt Nam is actively involved in the CD and has contributed significantly to disarmament agreements, assuming the CD chairmanship three times.
He pointed out that Việt Nam is a signatory to all major multilateral treaties concerning nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, including notable agreements resulting from CD negotiations, such as the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW).
Addressing the common concerns regarding global security and the challenges faced by the CD, Ambassador Dũng stressed the need for the CD to harness recent advancements, including the establishment of working groups focused on substantive issues. He urged member states to show a sense of responsibility and political will, enhance collaboration, and engage in flexible and inclusive discussions within the CD to overcome its current stagnation.
As a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Việt Nam promotes regional disarmament initiatives and advocates for the creation of nuclear-weapon-free zones globally. The ambassador reinforced the significance of the full and effective implementation of the Treaty on the Southeast Asia Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ), indicating Việt Nam’s readiness to collaborate with nuclear-armed states for their commitment to this treaty.
