Alhaji Asoma Banda, a prominent Ghanaian entrepreneur and philanthropist, was born in June 1933. He became the first Ghanaian to own an aircraft and significantly contributed to economic empowerment, employing over 500,000 people worldwide. After completing his education, he sought higher learning in London, obtaining certificates and a diploma in marketing before delving into various courses to refine his business acumen.

As a young man, Banda exhibited entrepreneurial traits by engaging in his family’s transport business. From 1955 to 1957, he undertook the demanding task of transporting cattle from neighboring countries to Kumasi. His zeal for education led him to London in 1960, where he worked as a director for Imperial Chemical Industries.

In 1975, he established the OT Africa Line shipping company alongside partners, leading to the creation of the Antrak Group of Companies in Ghana and London. Under his leadership, the company expanded to over 146 branches worldwide, generating employment for over 500,000 individuals. He was also the chairman of Antrak Air, marking a significant milestone as the first Ghanaian to own an airline.

Banda was dedicated to socio-economic development, financing the refurbishment of the maternity wing of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and investing in the Tema Container Terminal, which created approximately 100 jobs. His establishment of the Crime Prevention Foundation underscored his commitment to national security and community welfare.

Every year, Banda employed over 3,000 individuals and constructed a mosque at the Airport Residential Area, reflecting his dedication as a devout Muslim. Recognition of his contributions came through various awards, including being the first African to own a ship and an aircraft. He received the Companion of the Order of Volta for his achievements in the maritime sector.

A respected figure in multiple organizations, Banda contributed to the Council of State and the Ghana Port and Harbours Authority while engaging in political endeavors that led to the establishment of the People’s Convention Party. His leadership extended to academic institutions as Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba.

Recently, it was reported that Alhaji Asoma Banda has passed away. Dele Momodu, a Nigerian publisher, shared condolences on behalf of the family, expressing deep sympathy to his widow.
