Uzbekistan Commemorates 75th Anniversary of the Geneva Conventions and Their Uzbek Translation

On December 17, 2024, Uzbekistan celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions and the translation of these treaties into Uzbek in Latin script. On December 17, 2024, the National Human Rights Center of Uzbekistan, in collaboration with the Embassy of Switzerland and the ICRC Regional Delegation in Central Asia, celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions. This event also marked the presentation of their translation into the Latin script of Uzbek, reflecting the country’s transition from the Cyrillic to the Latin alphabet.
Over 50 participants attended, including legislators, government officials, representatives from international organizations, media, academia, and diplomatic corps. The gathering underscored the importance of the Geneva Conventions in International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and the need for accessible legal culture in Uzbekistan.
Academician Akmal Saidov emphasized the Geneva Conventions’ role in IHL, stating, “The Geneva Conventions form the cornerstone of International Humanitarian Law. Their translation into Uzbek using Latin script is a crucial step towards enhancing the legal culture of our society…” Ambassador Konstantin Obolensky acknowledged Switzerland’s historical advocacy for international law, affirming collaboration with Uzbekistan in supporting human rights.
Biljana Milosevic, Head of ICRC Regional Delegation in Central Asia, noted the urgency of humanitarian principles today, stating, “The principles of International Humanitarian Law are increasingly pertinent in today’s world…” The Uzbek translation aims to improve public access and understanding of these crucial legal instruments.
The event included a video presentation and a photo exhibition titled “Dialogues on Humanity,” highlighting the significance of the Geneva Conventions. The unveiling of the transliterated texts showcased Uzbekistan’s commitment to international humanitarian standards and the promotion of fundamental rights amidst armed conflict.
Participants engaged in discussions regarding IHL and human rights, expressing readiness to collaborate on initiatives to promote these fundamental principles further. Discussions reflected a shared commitment to enhancing public education and awareness on IHL.
The ceremony commemorating the Geneva Conventions highlighted Uzbekistan’s dedication to enhancing its legal culture through the translation of these critical documents into the Latin script.
