Aalto HAPS has successfully conducted a 4G connectivity test in Kenya using its Zephyr HAPS. This test, facilitated for Space Compass and NTT Docomo, marks the first wireless connection by a fixed-wing HAPS above 60,000 feet. Aalto HAPS has successfully conducted a stratospheric connectivity test in Kenya on behalf of its client, Space Compass, and its partner, NTT Docomo. The test involved connecting a 4G mobile device directly to Aalto’s Zephyr High Altitude Platform Station (HAPS), marking an important milestone in wireless communication technology. This achievement was announced on March 3, and it represents the first successful connection made by a fixed-wing HAPS operating above 60,000 feet.

During the demonstration, Aalto’s Zephyr facilitated a 4G mobile connection that enabled a telephone conversation from Kenya to the United Kingdom. The vehicle was equipped with a special connectivity payload, which included a direct-to-device gateway station in Kenya. Aalto also conducted various tests to assess the performance of its connectivity system through measurements of throughput and signal quality, all made possible due to the supportive regulatory framework in Kenya, which allowed for the safe launch and landing of the HAPS vehicle.

NTT Docomo, a leading mobile operator in Japan, alongside Space Compass—a joint venture between NTT and SKY Perfect JSAT—is part of the HAPS Japan consortium. This consortium has committed to a significant investment of $100 million in Aalto by 2024. With the collaboration of HAPS Japan, Aalto, and Airbus, there are plans to establish a roadmap for the commencement of commercial HAPS services in Japan by 2026.

Shigehiro Hori, co-CEO of Space Compass, emphasized the crucial role HAPS will serve in enhancing Japan’s communication infrastructure, particularly in remote areas and during natural disasters. He stated, “HAPS will play a critical role in Japan’s communications ecosystem, addressing hard-to-reach areas and supporting responses to events such as natural disasters. The demonstration of connectivity with Aalto’s Zephyr marks a strong start to 2025.”
