Armenian communities in the Middle East, particularly in Syria and Lebanon, face ongoing security, economic, and social challenges, as reported by Zareh Sinanyan, the High Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs at the Armenian Government. He emphasized that his office is closely monitoring the situation, especially in Syria, where instability remains prevalent. In response to the crisis, Sinanyan plans to visit Syria in April to address requests for evacuation made by Armenian nationals during the Aleppo offensive.
Sinanyan recounted the significant logistical challenges during the Aleppo offensive when numerous applications for evacuation were received from compatriots. After a short period, around 40 Armenians managed to cross to Lebanon and subsequently travel to Armenia. However, the outflow had significantly diminished after that time, although there has been a steady influx of over 200 Syrian-Armenians to Armenia since December of the previous year.
In regards to Lebanon, Sinanyan highlighted the continued precariousness of living conditions, indicating that without enhancements, many Armenians are likely to relocate. His office is actively assisting those seeking to move, addressing severe financial hardships faced by the Armenian community. He noted, “Our center is utilizing its entire resources to solve their problems,” which includes facilitating support for travel and accommodation.
Sinanyan stressed the importance of creating dignified conditions for Armenians wishing to settle in Armenia, warning that failure to do so may lead them to seek alternatives in other countries. He expressed a desire for an open fund to respond swiftly to community needs, stating that current partnerships have helped alleviate some of the challenges faced by those seeking assistance.
In summary, Zareh Sinanyan’s statements highlight the pressing issues faced by Armenian communities in the Middle East, particularly in Syria and Lebanon. His forthcoming visit to Syria aims to address evacuation requests from Armenians in crisis, while the ongoing economic difficulties in Lebanon necessitate concerted efforts for relocation support. The Armenian government aims to ensure that its diaspora can settle back home under favorable conditions to discourage emigration to other nations.
